What does 235-710R460A mean?

Tire sizes are easy to understand once you learn how to read them.  On this page you'll find a color-coded explanation of the 235-710R460A tire code.

235

This number indicates that your tire has a width of 235 millimeters.

R

This letter denotes how your tire was constructed.  Radial is the standard construction method for about 99% of all tires sold today.

RRadial
BBias Belt
DDiagonal
710

This number means that your tire has an overall diameter of 710 millimeters.

460

The tire size was designed to fit PAX rims that are 460 millimeters in diameter.  This is the metric equivalent of a 18.11-inch wheel or rim size.

A

The A mark reveals that this is a PAX system wheel or tire with an asymmetric bead.

Michelin created the PAX system as a new way to provide run-flat capability.  There is a reinforced polymer support ring that runs around the rim, followed by the usual air-filled tire on the outside of that.  If the air-filled tire gets punctured, you can drive on the support ring for about 100 miles.  Keep in mind that you must drive at a slower speed (max of 50 mph or 80 km/h).  One disadvantage to the PAX system is that you can't use regular tires on PAX wheels or rims.  This is because PAX tires have asymmetric beads.  In other words, the inside bead and the outside bead have a different diameter.  In a typical case, a 460 PAX tire will have an outside bead diameter of 450 millimeters and inside bead diameter of 470 millimeters.
